Uganda Primate says Barack Obama is 'unAfrican'
Jerusalem: US Presidential hopeful Barak Obama is un-African, the primate of Uganda said, and advocates moral positions at odds with the religious and cultural values of the continent.Speaking in response to statements made by the candidate's wife last week that posited a moral equivalency between the push for gay marriage and the civil rights movement, Archbishop Henry Orombi said: "It is distressing that Barack Obama, a fellow African, would promote racial civil rights as morally equivalent to immoral civil behaviour."

On the Road: Young Gay Activists
Lauren Topliffe, a junior at Oklahoma Baptist University, loves the school "for so many things--academically, spiritually, it's been great for me." But, as a lesbian, she's felt at constant risk--of harassment by other students and of violating school policy, which forbids engaging in or promoting homosexual behavior. (It also forbids heterosexual sex outside marriage.) Topliffe, 21, out to family and friends since she was 17, believes her sexual orientation is "pretty well known" on the 1,649-student campus. But she's never done anything that might risk disciplinary action by the school, which could include mandatory counseling or expulsion. Until now.

"It's time for me to do this," Topliffe told NEWSWEEK last week. Her decision to out herself on campus was inspired by the Soulforce Equality Riders, a busload of gay, mostly Christian activists who are barnstorming the country, trying to get a dialogue going at religious and military schools that believe gay behavior is wrong. Topliffe's is the kind of reaction Jake Reitan, 24, one of the ride organizers, was hoping for. "We're going to make this conversation happen," says Reitan, a Northwestern graduate who will attend the Harvard Divinity School.

That's been easier at some places than others. The Equality Riders have been received cautiously but cordially at most stops so far, including OBU (the tour began March 10 and ends April 26). But they were refused admission at Jerry Falwell's Liberty University, and 12 riders were arrested there when they ignored the order. "It's a different atmosphere at every school," says Reitan.

On the Road: Young Gay Activists Newsweek -

Gay Men Complacent When it Comes to HIV
Has the LGBT community become complacent when it comes to HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention? In recent years, an unnerving trend has shown its face in the gay community, and a new study from the Center for Disease Control is validating that claim. A study released last week has shown increases in new diagnoses of HIV in the category of "men who have sex with men," or MSM. In the five year span that was looked at (2001-2006), the highest number of new transmissions in the United States occurred in the MSM category. Also important to note is the fact that the category is called "men who have sex with men," and not "gay men" or "bisexual men," pointing to the fact that not all of these new infections were reported by men who identify as being either gay or bisexual. more

From 2006: background on the Governor's School of North Carolina
RALEIGH - Parents of a student who attended a taxpayer-funded summer educational institute are upset that the program included, without their prior knowledge, a seminar that promoted homosexuality. Jim and Beverly Burrows say their son returned home from last year's Governor's School "confused" about homosexuality as a result of the seminar, and that they have had to seek family counseling. "We feel that this was totally inappropriate for the students who were 15, 16, and 17 years old," the Burrowses wrote to officials at the State Departament of Public Instruction. "We feel that our rights as parents have been violated by this program." More of this background story.

The conflict was sparked by a 2005 optional seminar centered on a book called The New Gay Teenager (Adolescent Lives) by Ritch C.
